Atrial Fibrilation

Project Leads: Dr Karen Kearley, Dr Carl Heneghan, Prof David Mant, Dr Rafael Perera, Ms Mary Selwood, Dr Alison Ward, Prof David Fitzmaurice, Ellen Murray & Prof Richard Hobbs

The aim is to compare the feasibility and operating characteristics of two new technologies (the modified BP monitor and Handheld ECG) when used by Practice Nurses to detect Atrial Fibrilation compared with pulse palpation.
- Assess the time implications of using the devices together with follow up ECGs
- Assess acceptability to patients and clinicians
- Explore different options for handling the single lead ECG readout when the handheld monitor indicates an
abnormal pulse
- Determine risk factors for stroke at baseline using patient records (cardiac failure, hypertension, diabetes, stroke/TIA)
- Follow up patient records after one year to determine the proportion who have developed AF and/or complications of AF
- Determine adverse outcomes related to treatment after 1 year
