This tool was developed by the Monitoring and Diagnosis Group at the University of Oxford (Madox) as part of a systematic review into the normal variation of heart rate and respiratory rate in children from birth to 18 years.

This research resulted in the production of centile charts for both heart rate and respiratory rate in childhood, which differ considerably from existing reference ranges.
